How to Properly Restore Your Oral Health Following Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Posted .

If you’re about to undergo wisdom tooth surgery in Evanston, Wyoming, good for you! You’re about to improve your oral health. Now remember: after your treatment, it’s important to properly recover. Otherwise, you can experience complications that can harm your smile. To help you recover, Drs. Stosich, Viehweg, Brown, and Walker have some helpful tips for you.

First, stop the bleeding and decrease the swelling. You can stop the bleeding by covering the surgical site with a clean gauze pad. When you place the pad over the wound, bite down for about 45 minutes. Once the pad is soaked, replace it with a new pad. To reduce the inflammation, ice outside the area for 15 minutes and then take a 15-minute break. You can do so with an ice pack. Repeat this process until the swelling wanes.

Second, take the necessary medications. It’s typical for your dentist to give you pain medication following your surgery. If this is the case for you, please take the medication as recommended to relieve your pain. If you did not receive pain medication, feel free to take over-the-counter painkillers.

Third, only eat soft foods for the first 24 hours following surgery. It’s best to eat things like mashed potatoes, yogurt, ice cream, etc. This can help you avoid complications. In addition, please avoid using a straw. Using a straw can create dry socket.

It’s important to fully recover after your surgery, so if you have any questions whatsoever, please do not hesitate to call Wyoming Dental Specialties. Our dentists and team will be more than happy to assist you. All you need to do is dial 307-789-5608!
